Rainbow Basin is a site to see. Located off Fort Irwin Road, Northwest of Barstow, in Southern California. The pictures does not do it justice. You cannot believe the amazing colors of the landscape.
This is what the surrounding area looks like. You cannot see the basin from afar, but if you know where to look you can see a hint of the colors. Can you see it?
You can click on the pictures to make them bigger!
Have a great Friday!

Am I looking at the hills covered in California poppies? I’ve never been on that road, but I sure remember going through Ramona Expressway, down in the “basin” with the poppies, mustard and other wildflowers BLAZING with color. 😀

No poppies in this one. From the view in the last picture (click on it) you can see the colors of the earth in Rainbow Basin. It is in the very middle of the pictures. One could travel on the road I am on and never even know the canyon was there. I love the vastness of the desert. Some days it is like you are alone, Wait, I am alone! lol
There is lots of beauty in the desert, most of it hidden.

The last photo has super contrast. That blue sky is deep and the stripes are just showing through. Lovely 😉

It is amazing that the canyon lies in the distance. If they did not have signs to it nobody would know it was there. Unless they are like me and wants to know “where does that road lead?” lol

I’ve been through this basin several times, but not in a long time! I would love a repeat! Debra

Stunning, a place I may never get to see in my life time, appreciate the share – thank you. Are there rattle snakes there?

Although I have never seen one in this particular canyon I know that there are snakes all around. I live about an hour from here and there are snakes at my house. (hopefully not right now) Have you read my post Snake Season? Snakes are one of the disadvantages of living in the desert.

This kind of reminds me of the painted desert regions in Northern Arizona. Beautiful photos. I love the stark, but colorful landscape.

Yes it does but it is much, much smaller than the Painted Desert.

On our way to Death Valley, we took a side trip up Fort Irwin Road to find some hot springs that turned out to be closed to the public. Too bad we didn’t hang a left at Fossil Bed Road! 🙂 Next time…

There is a nice clean BLM campground, Owl Canyon Campground (Turn) right before you head down into Rainbow Basin. It does not have any hook ups, but it a great place to spend a few days. If you are a hiker you can hike to Rainbow Basin from the campground. Great Campground hosts. Next time, eh?

It brings back lots of Thanksgiving memories for us. This is where we go for Thanksgiving and we have a full turkey dinner with all the trimmings.

Thanks for letting me camp out in your blog for a little while. I had a great time and tried to leave my campsite as clean as when I arrived. I’ll be back!
